Operation Sindoor: Expanding India’s Freedom to Include Women’s Emancipation India’s quest for freedom has always intertwined political liberation with social reform. The independence struggle was fought not only against colonial rule but also to uplift oppressed groups. As Tagore warned, true freedom must go “beyond political independence into the realm of the mind and spirit”. Similarly, women were prominent participants in India’s freedom movement, and leaders like Raja Rammohan Roy and Pandita Ramabai campaigned for women’s rights long before 1947. In the decades after Independence, Indians sought to enshrine equality in law and society, granting women voting rights, outlawing sati and child marriage, and adopting a constitution guaranteeing gender equality. Yet many social norms remained patriarchal.
