Swachh Bharat Abhiyan: One Step
Towards A Cleaner India
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which is the Clean India Mission, is
one of the most recent key national campaigns launched by the Government of
India, started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, 2014, on Mahatma
Gandhi's birth anniversary. It is expected to achieve lofty standards of
cleanliness across urban and rural regions and to make the country open
defecation-free with better sanitation practices.
Mahatma Gandhi was a strong advocate of cleanliness and
hygiene. He often said, "Sanitation is more important than
independence", emphasizing that cleanliness was critical for a healthy
society. Gandhi believed that individual responsibility for keeping cleanliness
was a crucial part of Swaraj (self-rule). The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan reflects
this vision by involving citizens in keeping their surroundings clean.
There are two main components of the campaign known as
Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) and Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural). These focus on
toilet construction, improvement in waste management systems, and awareness of
hygiene. Millions of toilets have been built across the country, contributing
to improving sanitation in urban and rural regions. This infrastructure
development has significantly empowered women with a rise in health and
dignity, particularly in rural areas.
However, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan goes beyond mere physical
infrastructure. It focuses on behavioral changes and hygiene habits among its
people. Celebrities, public figures, and other leaders in the community
actively took part by advocating cleanliness habits. Consequently, roads,
public places, and villages did see a transformation overnight.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is the most significant step towards
fulfilling the vision that Gandhi had for a cleaner and healthier India. It is
a key step towards modernizing public health and environmental sustainability
and enhancing collective civic responsibility.
